Welcome to the website of the Institute of Economics, Zagreb. Here we provide some basic information about ourselves, our work, objectives and results of our work. Besides the information, I hope we will be able to help you get an insight into the values we all share, as well as the work culture and atmosphere in our organization.
The Institute of Economics, Zagreb is a public scientific institute that conducts scientific and development research in the field of economics. We are particularly dedicated to conducting empirical research in order to improve the understanding of Croatia's economy and identify policy measures that could spur its growth and development.
The Institute was founded in 1939, and owes its longevity to perseverance in the objectivity and quality of scientific research. Since then, the Institute has encouraged freedom of thought and expression. It is of great importance to us to maintain our independence of any political structure or interest group, and to remain unburdened by ruling ideologies. The impartiality in the scientific work we undertake also derives from our mixed financing – approx. 60% of our income is paid from the state budget, while the rest is earned on the market and comes from donations.
The Institute research team is very young on average, yet even senior members are still eager and enthusiastic about their scientific and research activities. We wish to undertake economic research that will correspond to international trends in terms of subject, content and method. Therefore, we encourage the acquisition of new knowledge and skills in the application of sophisticated analytical techniques. Our tradition implies open-minded cooperation with both Croatian and foreign scholars, and sound relations with the business community.
Our research interests vary according to changing needs. The current areas of interest include for the most part the economic aspects of accession to the European Union, innovations and technological development, investment in human capital, demographic changes, poverty, unemployment and social exclusion, corruption and fiscal decentralization, sustainable growth and regional policies.
We strive to make our findings publicly available in order to share them with policy-makers, representatives of the academic and business community and the general public as well. In particular, this website has a crucial role in ensuring that everything we do remains in the public domain.
