The research conducted under the title “The macroeconomic analysis of export competitiveness of the food industry of the Republic of Croatia" was the first study on the direct and indirect effects of the food industry on the Croatian economy and export competitiveness of the food sector in international markets. The research results confirmed the strategic importance of the food industry for the overall Croatian export, industrial production and the whole economy.

The research was funded by members of the EIZ Club: Agrokor d.d. and Privredna banka Zagreb d.d., and was conducted by researchers from the Institute of Economics, Zagreb: Goran Buturac, PhD and Maruška Vizek, PhD.

In the Croatian food industry, about 24 percent of the total production is being realized, and it employs about 20 percent of the employed. The food industry is the fifth biggest export branch within the processing industry in Croatia, and besides its effects on production and employment, it has great importance for the development of agricultural production. Therefore, improving the export competitiveness of the domestic food industry is an inevitable factor for the successful development of the industry and the economy as a whole.

The results of the research were presented at the round table held at the Institute of Economics, Zagreb, on June 2, 2015.
